No Impact Week

Individual change? Or working towards collective change? I’ve been putting energy towards collective change for 5 years thru Sustainable Ypsi and Transition Ypsi (and Growing Hope, and the Food Co-op, etc., etc., etc.) so I believe deeply in the need to change our culture of consumption.

But I don’t think it’s either-or. I think there’s power in individual change to influence others. I told one of the baristas at my favorite coffee house that I was ceasing to use plastic straws — that plastic never breaks down in the environment. He was thunderstruck! He insisted that it does… That interaction reverberated throughout the cafe — it’s still referred to. And that person was changed. Also, I am known as the “Foil Lady,” at the Bomber (no take-out containers — I ask for a piece of foil instead — but now I just bring my own). You get tagged as a weirdo sometimes, but I think it also raises consciousness…

And then there is the actual importance of living lives of simplicity and not using more than our share.  An image that speaks to me:

It shows the relationship between individual/community actions, and more large scale responses.
